Hoplites
SignificanceThese body armored men were very valuable in battle. Wearing all armor covering body equip with a shield to block off damage and a sword. Most men in a town were not these honored Hoplites. But if needed, ordinary citations would need to be able to take role of one.

EquipmentThe men were equip with a long ash wood spear (doru) and a short sword (xiphos). The spear was about 8 feet long similar to a pol vault poll you would see on a track field. It was normally tipped or fitted with a bronze or iron blade to penetrate through the enemy. The sword, was iron with a straight or sometimes even curved blade (machaira or kapis). This was only 60 cm in length. Most of the hoplites, were accuired with a dagger, a last resource is left empty handed (encheiridion).
